Raghuram Rajan as Chief Economic Adviser

Former IMF economist Dr Raghuram G. Rajan is the new Chief Economic Advisor. The present advisor, Dr Kaushik Basu’s term ends on July 31.

Dr Rajan has the distinction of being the youngest person to hold the post of Economic Counsellor and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He is also considered to be one of the first economists to see the financial crisis of 2008 coming.

Raghuram Rajan was born in Bhopal in 1963. In 1985, he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; he completed the Master of Business Administration at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1987. He received his PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1991 with a thesis entitled "Essays on Banking
