Rahul Bhattacharya has won the £10,000 RSL Ondaatje Prize, for his debut novel The Sly Company of People Who Care.

This year's judges, Nick Laird, Michèle Roberts and Kamila Shamsie admired ‘Bhattacharya’s verve and style as he brilliantly evokes the history and inhabitants and landscape of Guyana’.

The Delhi-based Bhattacharya spent a year in Guyana before writing his novel, in which a 26-year-old Indian journalist gives up his job to live in a country where he can "escape the deadness of life".
